Windsurf spots in West Fuerteventura

The west coast of Fuerteventura is its wave-sailing side, worked by Atlantic swell year-round. Side-shore trade wind on the beaches at El Cotillo and La Pared makes this the go-to zone when the North Shore is too small, best in autumn and winter. Check live wind, webcams and the forecast for every spot below.

El Cotillo (Piedra Playa)

El Cotillo's Piedra Playa (Playa del Castillo) is an exposed Atlantic beach break about 1 km south of the town, running some 1500 m beneath the cliffs. It is primarily a surf beach with wave-windsurfing, wave-kiting and winging for intermediate to advanced riders when the wind is up. There is no flat water, a strong current and a heavy, fast shorebreak, and no rescue service.

Wind: 15–25 kn · N, NE — Sports: surf, windsurf, kite, wing — Level: advanced

Rules: Informal sectors: surfers on the outside, kiters in the middle, one area for windsurf; customary zones only, not strictly regulated — give way to surfers and swimmers.

Caution: Strong current and heavy, fast shorebreak that must be crossed; no rescue; gusty near the cliffs; some rocks; offshore drift if you lose your gear.

El Cotillo Lagoons

The El Cotillo lagoons ('La Concha' / Los Lagos, also Los Charcos) are sheltered tidal pools with a white sand bottom just north of the town near the Faro de Tostón lighthouse. They are the area's flat-water beginner option — only about 1 m deep and 200 m long, flat at high and mid tide. They are strongly tide dependent: at low tide they drain and the sand and rocks are exposed, making them barely usable.

Wind: 15–25 kn · N, NE — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental

Rules: Much used for lessons; be considerate of swimmers, families and other riders in the tight space. No specific ban or protected zone documented.

Caution: Rocks in the sand bed at low tide; very shallow (fin and board); tight space gets crowded; gusty. Overall low risk — the main danger is misjudging the tide.

La Pared

La Pared is an exposed Atlantic beach break over dark sand on the island's south-west coast, reached by a free clifftop car park and stone steps. It is primarily a surf beach; the prevailing north trade wind blows onshore to slightly side-on, so wave-kiting and wave-windsurfing are only occasional and for experts, when there is plenty of wind and the right tide. A strong rip current (especially at the south end) sets toward high cliffs and there is no rescue.

Wind: 20–30 kn · N, NE — Sports: surf, kite, windsurf, SUP — Level: expert — On site: school, rental, food

Rules: No formal kite/wind zoning; wind riders are rare and share the beach with busy surf and school operations. No specific parking restriction documented.

Caution: Strong rip current (especially at the south end) setting toward the cliffs on big days; heavy shorebreak; rocks at the bay ends and on the steps; high cliffs and no rescue; onshore wind pushes gear and riders in. At times crowded surf schools.
