Windsurf & wing spots in Northern Switzerland

From the foehn arenas of the Urnersee and Lake Thun to the Lake Constance bise and the Sihlsee light-wind foil lab: Northern Switzerland packs the widest range of spots in the country, each with a MeteoSwiss station nearby for honest live wind.

Isleten (Urnersee)

Switzerland's foehn arena: when south foehn funnels down the Reuss valley into the Urnersee, Isleten delivers 20–35 kn over deep, fjord-like water framed by cliffs — the country's most spectacular kite spot. Conditions are powerful and switch fast; this is advanced terrain with a dedicated local scene.

Wind: 15–35 kn · S, SE — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: advanced

Rules: Since 2021 launching and landing at Isleten beach is reserved for Kite Uri members and registered day guests (visible club lycra mandatory). Register online before your session; respect the Rütli–Treib exclusion zone across the lake.

Caution: Foehn collapses abruptly (glassy lulls between 30-kn phases), violent gusts off the cliffs, cold deep water, lee shore hazards at the rock faces.

Sihlsee (Euthal)

Switzerland's light-wind foil laboratory at 889 m: the Sihlsee works with kite foils and foil kites from as little as 7–8 kn at the launch meadow. The Kitesurfclub Sihlsee rents a dedicated launch area between Willerzell and Euthal — access for members and day guests only. A reference spot for modern light-wind riding rather than powered sessions.

Wind: 7–14 kn · W, NW — Sports: kite, wing — Level: advanced — On site: club

Rules: Kiteboarding ban at Euthal itself; launch/landing ONLY on the club meadow between Willerzell and Euthal (KSC members CHF 60/yr or day ticket CHF 10, Twint on site) plus the two rented water accesses at the Euthal rock. Exclusion zone south of the Steinbach viaduct; 0–150 m shore strip for launch/landing only.

Caution: Shallow reservoir with variable water level, light and shifty wind — foil gear and light-wind skills required.

Bodensee — Altnau/Romanshorn

The Swiss shore of Lake Constance works in bise (NE along the lake axis) and in westerly fronts, with the Güttingen reference station right on the water. Wide, uncluttered shoreline between Altnau and Romanshorn, harbour infrastructure and the mellow charm of the Thurgau apple coast.

Wind: 10–20 kn · NE, W, SW — Sports: windsurf, wing, kite — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: International lake rules (IBMV) apply; keep clear of harbour entries and ferry lines.

Caution: Storm warnings (blinking lights) demand fast exits; long fetch builds real chop.

Berlingen (Untersee)

On the narrow Untersee arm of Lake Constance, Berlingen has long been one of the few explicitly kite-friendly shores of the region. Westerlies funnel along the lake; the Steckborn station 800 m away tells you exactly what is happening. Small, neighbourly and uncomplicated.

Wind: 9–18 kn · W, NE — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels

Rules: Narrow lake with ferry traffic and nature-reserve shores nearby — stay in the open water corridor.

Caution: Little room to drift; reeds and shallows at both ends.

Sempachersee (Nottwil)

Central Switzerland's everyday lake: westerly fronts and a decent bise both reach Nottwil's open shore. No drama, easy access, and honest mid-lake wind that makes it a solid after-work option for the Lucerne crowd.

Wind: 9–18 kn · W, NE — Sports: windsurf, wing, kite — Level: all levels

Rules: Bird-protection zones at the south-east end — keep distance; BSV rules.

Caution: Reference station is 11 km inland — verify locally; short fetch means gusty puffs.

Flüelen (Urnersee)

The windsurf and wing side of the Urnersee foehn arena, at the southern tip of Lake Lucerne. When south foehn crosses the Alps it channels between the cliffs with gusts beyond 50 kn — spectacular, warm and seriously demanding. On non-foehn days a gentler northerly system serves relaxed sessions off the Gruonbach delta.

Wind: 12–35 kn · S, SE, N — Sports: windsurf, wing, kite — Level: advanced — On site: food

Rules: Keep the ship lanes to Flüelen harbour free; BSV rules (08:00–21:00).

Caution: Foehn collapse leaves glassy holes between 30+ kn phases; violent cliff gusts; deep cold water.

Thun Gwatt

The Bernese windsurf classic at the outflow end of Lake Thun: westerly fronts arrive with the full length of the lake behind them, and summer afternoons add the thermal. The Gwatt shore with its campsite and boat clubs has carried the local scene for decades — with the Alps as backdrop.

Wind: 9–18 kn · W, NW — Sports: windsurf, wing, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Respect the bathing area and boat moorings; BSV rules.

Caution: Wind shadow close to shore, moored boats downwind of the launch.

Neuhaus (Thunersee)

On the south shore near Interlaken, Neuhaus lives off the 'Oberländer' — the W–NW thermal that builds reliably on summer afternoons. An open stretch of lake, a proper beach to rig on and the Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau panorama across the water make it the Bernese Oberland's friendliest wind spot.

Wind: 9–18 kn · W, NW — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: food, rental

Rules: Shared beach with bathers — use the established launch corridor; BSV rules.

Caution: Thermal fades quickly with cloud cover; busy summer beach.

Nuolen (Obersee)

The upper end of Lake Zurich is a different lake: the Obersee at Nuolen catches westerlies and bise with surprising reliability — statistically on par with Lake Geneva's best (33 of 92 summer days ≥10 kn). An established kite and windsurf bay with school infrastructure and easy shore access.

Wind: 10–20 kn · W, SW, NE — Sports: windsurf, wing — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental

Rules: KITESURFING IS PROHIBITED here: the Obersee east of the Aahorn–Stampf line is a no-kite zone (SZ/SG) and the Nuolener Ried is a protected mire of national importance. Windsurf and wing only; respect the reserve boundaries.

Caution: Shallow bay with seasonal weed; kite zone boundaries enforced.

Aegerisee

A compact pre-Alpine lake at 724 m with a loyal local windsurf club and honest westerly-plus-thermal afternoons. Never crowded, quickly read, and the Oberägeri station 1.8 km away removes all guesswork — a classic 'small but real' Swiss spot.

Wind: 8–16 kn · W, NW — Sports: windsurf, wing — Level: all levels

Rules: Respect bathing areas; BSV rules.

Caution: Light-wind bias — foil-friendly; sudden west gusts off the hills.

Zugersee (Brüggli)

A demanding Central Swiss spot for experienced riders: the only authorised launch is the Brüggli bathing area near the campsite. Westerlies and south foehn drive it, but the wind arrives gusty with sudden shifts and the launch sits partly in wind shadow behind trees — solid upwind riding is mandatory.

Wind: 9–20 kn · W, SW, S — Sports: kite, wing — Level: advanced — On site: food

Rules: Launch and land ONLY at Badeplatz Brüggli; no stationary inflated kites; respect the bathing operation.

Caution: Gusty, shifting wind; trees in the launch; weakest wind statistics of the Swiss list — pick your days.

Brienzersee (Bönigen)

The turquoise fjord of the Bernese Oberland: the same westerly thermal system as neighbouring Lake Thun funnels along the steep shores on summer afternoons. Launch at Bönigen near Interlaken; a small but growing wing scene appreciates the deep, clean water and the wild scenery.

Wind: 9–17 kn · W, NW — Sports: wing, windsurf — Level: intermediate

Rules: Keep the ship lanes free; steep shores leave few exit points — plan your session.

Caution: Very cold, deep water; few bail-out beaches; afternoon gusts off the cliffs.

Greifensee

Zurich's local light-wind lake: westerly fronts deliver honest foil sessions surprisingly often (22 of 92 summer days ≥10 kn), minutes from the city. The lake is a nature reserve with strict zones — riding happens from the designated water-sports accesses only, which keeps it calm and green.

Wind: 8–15 kn · W, NW — Sports: wing, windsurf — Level: intermediate

Rules: Strict nature-reserve zoning (reed belts!); launching only at designated accesses — verify current local rules before your first session.

Caution: Reed belts and protected shallows; light shifty wind.
