Windsurf & wing spots in Ticino
Ticino rides the Inverna: the southerly valley wind of Lago Maggiore serves Tenero every fair afternoon, while the Agno bay on Lake Lugano is the mellow learning corner.
Tenero / Magadino (Lago Maggiore)
Ticino's wind machine: the Inverna, the southerly valley wind of Lago Maggiore, arrives at the Magadino plain on fair-weather afternoons with Mediterranean reliability. Tenero's campsite shore is the classic launch; kite is restricted near the Bolle di Magadino reserve, so check the zones. Palm-tree sessions, Swiss precision.
Wind: 10–18 kn · S, SW — Sports: windsurf, wing, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, food
Rules: Kitesurfing is effectively not legal here: the Bolle di Magadino is a federal waterbird reserve (kite ban per WZVV) and Ticino bans kiting in the Locarno bay plus within 150 m of lidos and harbours. Windsurf/wing: keep out of the delta reserve zones (marked) and 150 m off the reed shores.
Caution: Afternoon storms build fast against the Alps; reserve boundaries patrolled.
Agno (Lago di Lugano)
The Agno bay on Lake Lugano catches its own afternoon southerly on sunny days — smaller and softer than the Maggiore Inverna, but with a long windsurf tradition, school infrastructure at the beach and Lugano airport's weather station right next door.
Wind: 8–15 kn · S, SW — Sports: windsurf, wing, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food
Rules: Airport approach zone overhead — kites restricted; respect bathing beach.
Caution: Light-wind bias; boat traffic from the marina.
