Windsurf & wing spots in Western Switzerland

Joran evenings off the Jura, bise days at Le Vengeron, the high valley of the Lac de Joux: the lakes of the Suisse romande deliver more wind than their postcard image suggests.

Le Vengeron (Genève)

Geneva's bise machine: with more than 25 years of kite history, Le Vengeron on the right bank of Lake Geneva is the Léman reference when the north-easterly bise blows — steady wind, open water and a quick city escape. The MeteoSwiss Cointrin station sits 2 km away, so the live reading is essentially the spot.

Wind: 12–25 kn · NE — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Kite launch closed in high summer (roughly 1 July–31 Aug, picnic season) and kiting prohibited on the Petit-Lac below the Vengeron–Tour-Carrée line — wing/windsurf unaffected. Harbour construction is ongoing (2026): access and parking change frequently; paid parking.

Caution: Cold water outside midsummer, chop building with the bise fetch, busy shoreline.

Portalban

The club spot of Lake Neuchâtel's south-east shore: Swisskite Portalban has run the beach for over two decades, including a September foil competition. Works in bise (NE) and with the evening Joran (NW), with a wide launch beach and friendly scene — the best entry point into Romandie kiting.

Wind: 10–22 kn · NE, NW — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels — On site: club, food

Rules: Club beach — follow Swisskite launch zones and give way to swimmers in summer.

Caution: Joran arrives suddenly in the evening and can gust hard; shallow sandbanks close to shore.

Cudrefin

The experts' corner of Lake Neuchâtel, right next to the Fanel bird reserve: Cudrefin fires in south-westerlies and with the Joran, and in strong bise it becomes a proper down-the-line playground for those who know it. A locals' spot with real rules and real rewards.

Wind: 12–25 kn · SW, NW, NE — Sports: kite, wing — Level: expert

Rules: Strictly respect the Fanel nature reserve boundary (no-go zone east of the launch) and local access rules — this spot exists because riders behave.

Caution: Offshore tendencies in SW, sudden Joran, reserve boundary, shallow banks — experts and accompanied riders only.

Yvonand

Sandy beaches on the south shore of Lake Neuchâtel make Yvonand the friendliest Joran spot in the west: on sunny evenings the north-westerly thermal off the Jura kicks in around dinner time and delivers steady rides over shallow, warm-ish water — a favourite for wing and kite progression.

Wind: 10–20 kn · NW, W — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Summer bathing beaches — launch outside marked swim zones; BSV rules (kiting until 21:00 fits the Joran perfectly).

Caution: Evening-only window on many days; shallow sand ridges; wind fades fast after sunset.

Le Bouveret / Villeneuve

At the very end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône delta funnels wind into the Haut-Lac: the Vaudaire (foehn from the Rhône valley) and westerlies both deliver here. Launch is from the nautical base between Rive Bleue campsite and the Stockalper canal — a tiny, technical takeoff with a 150 m walk and turbulence from upwind obstacles. Rewarding open water for experienced riders.

Wind: 12–28 kn · SW, W, S — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: advanced — On site: food

Rules: The entire Grangettes/delta reserve area is closed in winter for bird nesting. Launch only at the nautical base; respect the canal and harbour traffic.

Caution: Very small, slightly downwind launch; turbulence near shore; Vaudaire gusts arrive with little warning.

Grandson / Yverdon

The south-west corner of Lake Neuchâtel catches both the evening Joran off the Jura and south-westerlies running the full length of the lake. Wide shore access around Grandson and Yverdon's beaches, friendly water and a growing wing scene make this the roomier alternative to the busier club spots.

Wind: 10–20 kn · NW, SW — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Keep clear of marked swim areas in summer; BSV rules apply.

Caution: Evening-weighted wind window; shallow banks near the Grandson shore.

St-Blaise (Neuchâtel)

The city spot of Neuchâtel at the lake's north-east end. In south-westerlies the full fetch of the lake arrives here and conditions can be epic; the Joran adds evening sessions. Grass-and-pebble launch that sits sheltered right at the shore — once you are out, it is pure joy.

Wind: 10–22 kn · SW, NW — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf, SUP — Level: intermediate — On site: food

Rules: Urban shoreline: respect bathers, harbour entries and the sheltered launch corridor.

Caution: Wind shadow at the shore understates the real wind on the water; boat traffic.

La Neuveville (St-Joux)

Lake Biel's gem opposite St. Peter's Island: ideal in bise, with deep water right off the beach and barely any chop — which is why the foil crowd loves it. The O'Lé restaurant sits directly on the spot. Relaxed, scenic and one of the friendliest launches in the region.

Wind: 10–20 kn · NE, SW — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Respect the bathing beach and SUP traffic in summer; BSV rules.

Caution: Deep water immediately — no standing depth; ferry route to the island.

Lac de Joux

The Jura's high-valley lake at 1004 m is the Romandie's most reliable summer arena when westerlies cross the ridge. The Pointe de Sable offers a 35 m sand spit reaching into the lake that works in both main wind directions; Les Bioux is the second launch. Cool water, big skies, picnic country.

Wind: 10–22 kn · SW, NE, W — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf — Level: all levels

Rules: Camping on the shore is prohibited; use the two established launches (Pointe de Sable, Les Bioux).

Caution: Cold mountain water even in summer; weather flips quickly over the Jura.

Murtensee (Morat)

The smallest of the Three-Lakes trio still catches the Joran and the bise, with a mellow shoreline between Murten and Salavaux. Statistically windier than its reputation (29 of 92 summer days ≥10 kn at the reference station) — an easy-going alternative when the Neuchâtel spots are crowded.

Wind: 9–18 kn · NW, NE, SW — Sports: wing, windsurf, kite — Level: all levels — On site: food

Rules: Kiting allowed since 2016 except the protected zones at both lake ends; the Pantschau kite launch in Murten is closed 1 June–15 Sep (use entry corridors, 30 m body-drag rule). Until the Vaud-side situation is resolved, ride from the Fribourg shore.

Caution: Reference station is a 13 km proxy — check live wind locally; shallow, warm bays kill the thermal early.
