Windsurf spots in West Sardinia

West Sardinia delivers the island's best wave sailing. Capo Mannu and the Sinis peninsula face the open Mistral, with Putzu Idu, Bosa, Alghero and Torre dei Corsari rounding out the coast. See live wind, webcams and the forecast for each spot below.

Putzu Idu / Capo Mannu

Top wave/wind spot in Sardinia. Capo Mannu = Sardinian Pipeline. Mini Capo, Sa Mesa Longa + beginner beach.

Wind: 25–50 kn · NW, W — Sports: windsurf, surf, wing, kite — Level: advanced — On site: school, rental, food

Rules: Capo Mannu point is an expert wave spot — localism, make friends onshore first. Beginners use the flat Putzu Idu beach (first kite/windsurf contact).

Caution: Sharp pumice-rock & reef shoreline (booties advised), sea urchins, powerful waves, leashes snag on the reef. Ponente blows onshore — risky in the bays.

Mari Ermi

Quartz sand beach Sinis peninsula. Wind/wave, exposed.

Wind: 15–40 kn · SE, NW — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, surf — Level: advanced — On site: camping, food, WC

Rules: Removing the white quartz sand is strictly forbidden and fined. Scirocco (SE) is offshore here, giving flat-water speed/freestyle close in; in SSW–NW it turns to bump-and-jump or moderate waves.

Caution: Scirocco is offshore — you drift seaward fast and breakages leave you downwind of land; never sail alone. Exposed, gusty in strong wind.

Is Arutas

Famous rice-grain beach. Exposed to Mistral wave.

Wind: 12–35 kn · NW, W — Sports: windsurf, surf, kite — Level: intermediate — On site: food, WC

Rules: Removing the famous quartz 'rice-grain' sand is forbidden and actively fined; bilingual signs warn against it. Paid parking roughly May–early November.

Caution: Fully exposed to the Mistral and short, messy chop — not a spot for the strong Maestrale. Sandstone rocks at both headlands; very crowded in summer.

San Giovanni di Sinis

Classic windsurf spot on Sinis peninsula. Shallow sand, all levels.

Wind: 10–30 kn · NW, W — Sports: windsurf, surf, kite — Level: all levels — On site: school, food, WC

Rules: Exposed beach break with lefts and rights; best on a NW swell with offshore NE wind. Paid parking roughly 1 May–2 November.

Caution: Watch for rocks and sea urchins. Mostly flat in summer; fairly consistent the rest of the year.

S'Archittu

Wave/surf spot with famous rock arch. Wavesail in NW.

Wind: 15–35 kn · NW, W — Sports: surf, windsurf — Level: advanced

Rules: Right-hand point/reef break working with Ponente, Maestrale and Libeccio; best on large SW swells, holds some offshore wind from the ENE with shelter from N. Inconsistent, mostly flat in summer.

Caution: Rocky bottom and the rock arch — rocks are the main hazard; for intermediate-to-advanced surfers only. Rarely crowded.

Torre Grande (Oristano)

Oristano town beach. Beginner windsurf in moderate conditions.

Wind: 8–22 kn · W, NW, SW — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food, WC

Rules: Sheltered spot in the centre of the Gulf of Oristano — safe, beginner-friendly flat water that works with most wind directions (SE/N/NW/W). A school offers windsurf, wingfoil and SUP courses and rental.

Caution: Sheltered flatwater bay — low-hazard for learners; wind can be light when the gulf is in a lee.

Torre dei Corsari

Huge Costa Verde dunes. Wave spot, side-onshore Mistral. Experts.

Wind: 15–40 kn · NW, W — Sports: surf, windsurf, kite — Level: advanced — On site: food, WC

Rules: Long sandy beach break with several shifting peaks (lefts and rights) plus a left reef at the point; works on small-to-medium W/NW swells. Side-onshore in the Maestrale, which is the dominant and often strong wind here.

Caution: Strong, gusty Maestrale and exposed Costa Verde shore break; left point breaks over rock/reef. Protected dunes behind the beach — stay on marked paths.

Bosa Marina

Beach + Temo river mouth. Wave/sail in NW.

Wind: 10–30 kn · W, NW — Sports: windsurf, kite, surf, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, food, WC

Rules: Long sandy bay by the Temo river mouth with a windsurf/kite school and rental. The left near the harbour is sheltered with little wave; the right side toward Isola Rossa gets the full, strong Maestrale.

Caution: Maestrale can be very strong on the exposed right side; rocky pier/Isola Rossa to the south. River-mouth water quality can vary after rain.

Spiaggia Poglina

Wave/surf spot south of Alghero.

Wind: 12–35 kn · W, NW, SW — Sports: surf, windsurf — Level: advanced — On site: food

Rules: Best with strong, sustained Maestrale (NW); the quality right-hand wave works mainly in autumn/winter swells. Experienced riders only.

Caution: Right-hand wave breaks over a shallow, rocky seabed with sea urchins — exposed rocks at low water.

Alghero / Maria Pia

Alghero town beach. Windsurf in Mistral.

Wind: 8–22 kn · NW, W, SE — Sports: windsurf, kite, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food, WC

Rules: Long town beach (Lido) with room to manoeuvre, suitable for beginners; in summer kiting is moved to the dedicated kite zone/corridor at San Giovanni beach a few minutes away.

Caution: Open town beach, low-hazard for beginners; busy with bathers and gusty close to town in summer.

Mugoni (Porto Conte)

Sheltered Porto Conte bay. Beginner spot.

Wind: 8–20 kn · N — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food, WC

Rules: Sheltered Porto Conte bay inside the Capo Caccia–Isola Piana Marine Protected Area; NW summer thermals up to ~20 kn and the wide bay allow safe beginner practice. In summer kiting is concentrated in the kite area at Le Ninfe beach (~1 km from Mugoni).

Caution: Low-hazard sheltered bay; West winds make it gusty with long lulls. Crowded in summer.

Tramariglio

Riviera del Corallo panorama. Wind indicator for the region.

Wind: 5–15 kn · NW, W — Sports: SUP — Level: beginner

Rules: Small cove in the eastern end of Porto Conte bay, inside the Capo Caccia–Isola Piana Marine Protected Area (zoned A/B/C with 5–10 kn navigation limits) — not an established board-sailing spot; Mugoni is the area's windsurf/kite base.

Caution: Small narrow cove with a mixed sand-and-rock seabed and shallows.

Porto Ferro

Wave/surf spot with orange sand. Wavesail in NW.

Wind: 12–35 kn · W, NW — Sports: surf, windsurf, SUP — Level: intermediate — On site: school, rental, food

Rules: Powerful beach break working with W/NW/N/SW swells; best waves with Maestrale, strongest in winter. Lifeguarded in summer.

Caution: Powerful waves and strong lateral/undertow currents — frequent rescues; one of the west coast's higher-risk beaches.
