Windsurf spots in South Sardinia
South Sardinia is a year-round playground. Punta Trettu is a world-class beginner flatwater spot, while Chia, Cagliari's Poetto and Porto Botte suit wind and wave riders. Check live wind, webcams and the forecast for every spot below.
Costa Rei / Muravera
8 km beach, popular windsurf spot. All levels. Grecale and Tramontana are the reliable winds; Levante comes straight in.
Wind: 10–28 kn · N, NE, E — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, food, WC
Rules: Not very wind-reliable in summer; best in autumn–spring with Grecale, Levante and Scirocco. During the bathing season (1 May–31 Oct) windsurf/kite must launch outside swimmer zones via designated corridors only.
Caution: Onshore and choppy in Scirocco; can get crowded with bathers in summer.
Cala Sinzias
Large sandy beach south of Costa Rei. Wave/flat mix, Scirocco onshore.
Wind: 8–22 kn · E, SE, S — Sports: windsurf, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food
Rules: Works in any Easterly plus N and S; short beach and inconsistent wind make it a secondary spot. Windsurf lessons offered only in high summer by a beach club; no kite school due to the short beach.
Caution: Onshore and choppy in Scirocco; small waves with stronger easterlies.
Cagliari / Poetto
Cagliari city beach, 8 km. Very popular windsurf spot in Scirocco.
Wind: 10–30 kn · SE, E — Sports: windsurf, kite, wing, SUP, surf — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, food, WC
Rules: Sardinia's busiest urban water-sports beach; the windsurf club sits at the west end below the Sella del Diavolo by Marina Piccola. In summer thermal Scirocco blows almost daily. Bathing-season rules require launching outside swimmer zones.
Caution: Very crowded with bathers in summer; onshore chop in Scirocco.
Capoterra / La Maddalena
Beach SW of Cagliari. Windsurf in Scirocco/Mezzogiorno.
Wind: 12–30 kn · SE, S, SW — Sports: kite, windsurf, wing — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, food, WC
Rules: Best in summer thermal southerlies and Scirocco; the afternoon thermal (from ~1 pm) typically reaches 14–20 kn. Kiters must launch and land through the local school's corridor only — leaving the corridor is not allowed. The end section (Copperton) is quieter but has no services.
Caution: Choppy water; beach sits between a refinery and industrial zone, though the water is clean.
Chia / Su Giudeu
Top wave/freeride spot in the south. Clean waves in Levante/Scirocco (best Sept–May), side-off in Libeccio and Ponente. All levels.
Wind: 12–35 kn · E, SE, SW, W — Sports: windsurf, kite, surf, wing, SUP — Level: intermediate — On site: school, rental, food, camping, WC
Rules: Summer (Jun–Sep): no beach kite-launch — boat start only from Wind Wave Club (Su Giudeu); in winter kiting is open. Summer thermal blows offshore.
Caution: Shallow rocks near the islet; very crowded in summer; offshore thermal wind — stay cautious.
Porto Pino
Caribbean-style beach with dunes. Wave + flat behind the sandbar.
Wind: 10–30 kn · W, NW, S — Sports: kite, windsurf, wing, surf — Level: intermediate — On site: school, rental, food, WC, camping
Rules: Kitesurfing is not allowed from mid-June to mid-September (no corridor, many bathers); the rest of the year you can ride the first beach section or by the dunes. The dunes (Is Arenas Biancas) lie inside the Capo Teulada military range and are accessible only in summer.
Caution: Gusty wind, especially side-off Mistral and Scirocco; choppy or wavy water — not for beginners.
Porto Botte
One of Sardinia's windiest windsurf spots. Flat + consistent. All levels.
Wind: 12–40 kn · N, NW, W — Sports: kite, wing, windsurf, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food, camping, WC
Rules: Summer: approved kite-launch zones mandatory (riding up to ~200 m out); three zones (Il Fortino north → Is Solinas south). Beginners: use the rescue service — hard to return in deep water.
Caution: Very flat & shallow (0.3–1 m), sandy bottom — low-hazard; but in deep water / onshore wind the return can be hard.
Sant'Antioco / Sa Barra
Lagoon + sandbar. Flatwater spot, ideal for beginner windsurf/wing.
Wind: 8–25 kn · NW, W, SE — Sports: windsurf, wing, SUP — Level: all levels — On site: school, rental, WC
Rules: Sa Barra is a windsurf-reserved flatwater lagoon by local agreement — kiters stay north of Punta Trettu. Best in NW (local thermals make it far windier than forecast) and sideshore Scirocco; reckoned good for windsurfing some 250 days a year.
Caution: Very low-hazard: flat, shallow lagoon with a causeway downwind preventing drift; watch for fishing lines.
Punta Trettu
THE beginner flatwater spot of Europe. Knee-deep flatwater, sandy, very consistent.
Wind: 12–40 kn · NW, W, SE — Sports: kite, windsurf, wing, SUP — Level: beginner — On site: school, rental, food, WC, camping
Rules: Kite launch only at Punta Trettu Kite Beach (two zones, one school-only) — not at the parking/marina. Riding outside the zones is fined.
Caution: Very shallow — easy to stand, low-hazard. Gusty in strong Mistral.
Buggerru / San Nicolò
Wave spot, popular surf break. Wavesail in moderate wind.
Wind: 12–30 kn · W, NW — Sports: surf, windsurf — Level: advanced — On site: school, food, WC
Rules: Popular wave/surf break on the wild west coast, best October–March; the Maestrale (NW) builds the swell. Wavesail in moderate wind. Dozens of surfers gather when it pumps.
Caution: Powerful waves; cold, deep water and white rocks at the south end. Crowded on good swells.
Porto Paglia (Gonnesa)
Wave spot, small sandy beach. Good in W swell.
Wind: 12–30 kn · W, NW — Sports: surf, windsurf, kite — Level: advanced — On site: food, WC
Rules: Wave spot in the Gulf of Gonnesa, best from autumn to spring; the Maestrale (NW) blows strong on-/side-onshore straight into the gulf, Ponente (W) works well spring–autumn. Loved by surfers and wave-riders.
Caution: Sea currents can be treacherous in rough seas; onshore/side-on wind and waves — for experienced riders.
